What is the difference between a tomatillo and a green tomatoe? They look the same to me, and so adding it to salsa seems redundant when you have tomatoes already in it.
While the tomatillo is sometimes called a "husk tomato" or "Mexican tomato," it is really not a true tomato, but a member of the tomato family. It has a paper-like husk around it, which makes it easily identifiable. In Mexico the fruit is called tomates verdes, tomates de cascara as well as fresadillas.
There are many other varieties as well. The flavor is bright and tart when used green, or if ripened further can take on a sweeter flavor. Great for salsas and used widely in Latin America.
